Bat Description

Appearance

The most common bat species found in the area is the little brown bat. These bats are relatively small and only have wingspans ranging from 9-15 inches. All bats share common characteristics such as wings that resemble broad webbed hands, short legs, and sharp claws. Their large ears are used for hearing high-pitched squeaks that aid in navigation and communication. Bats can range in color from light tan or yellowish, to dark brown and black.

Habitat

Bats will hang out together in groups of millions during the day. Using their feet, bats will cling upside down to the ceilings of caves, hollow trees, attics, and buildings as they sleep. Bats will wake up around dusk and fly out of their roosting spot to hunt for flying insects. The preferred roosting spots are near a pond or lake - as the insect population is higher near water.

Bat Problems

Entry

Bats are able to get through very small openings into your home. They will enter your home in search of a warm and sheltered roosting area and on accident during the summer when bat pups are learning how to fly. Open windows and doors, cracks in siding, loose roofing materials, and chimney caps that are not secured are great ways for bats to enter your home!

Bat Damage

Bats and humans generally coexist without any problems. Bats inside of homes will create a mess that is hazardous, stinky, and problematic. Wherever there is a bat control problem, that bat guano will be a serious problem. Bat droppings will stain building materials, create a stench throughout your home, and create health problems! Bat guano can harbor dangerous fungal spores that can cause great health problems.
